Who am I? |
|
I completed GP training in Leicestershire in the UK, then worked in a general practice for a year, before coming out to Australian in January 1992. Being unfamiliar with the general practice system in Australia (being an International Medical Graduate), I opted to work as a Medical Registrar at Fremantle Hospital in WA. |
Whilst working in a hospital setting primarily, I started to do weekend work in
general practice, at the Hatherley Medical Centre in Winthrop. At the end of my year at Fremantle Hospital, I joined the Hatherley Medical Centre, for a year, as a long term locum. |
It was during this year that I realised that I had not seen a great deal of Australia
and, with encouragement from Dr Tim Lipsombe and Dr John Hearne, at Hatherley, I decided that I would work in rural WA. Having not obtained procedural skills in Obstetrics or Anaesthetics, and not wishing to take services away from a rural community, I decided that a larger centre was probably the better option for me. I moved to Kalgoorlie in February 1994. |
During my 6 years in Kalgoorlie, I improved my clinical skills, gained a greater appreciation of the issues and challenges of rural general practice and had a fantastic experience! It was during this time in Kalgoorlie that I developed the small business skills that were to serve me well over the years to come. I also started to increase my computer skills and experience, becoming one of the first practices in WA to go fully computerised with Medical Spectrum in 1997. |
As my children approached High School age, my wife, Cathy, and I decided that we would return to the city and consider the next stage of our careers. My wife is also a GP and our 2 doctor practice in Kalgoorlie, is completely different to the very large practice that we now run in Kalamunda and High Wycombe; the Stirk Medical Group. |
