International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
|
Having originally trained outside of Australia, particularly having done all of my GP
training in a foreign country, I have insight to the issues and problems that face IMGs. Even though my training was in
the UK, and my first language is English, there was still a period of adjustment, to the different approach and nature of
general practice in Australia.

The Stirk Medical Group has doctors working at the practice from Poland and Malaysia. Stirk
has also been involved in helping orientate IMGs to the Medicare system (MBS) and PBS. I am also involved with Rural Health West and
interviewing IMGs, as part of their assessment and placement process in rural West Australia. I have worked at the WA Faculty of the
RACGP in a role as an FICPI interviewer. Fitness for Intended Clinical Practice Interview (FICPI). I continue to work through the WA Faculty of the RACGP and as the Medical Director of the Stirk Medical
Group, to try to ease the journey of IMGs, who have chosen to come and work in Australia.

This important group of doctors continue to play a crucial role in the delivery of general
practice services, particularly in those areas that desperately need their help; rural and remote Australia. Ensuring that
these doctors have access to Educational, Cultural and Language support, is the minimum that the general practice profession
should be doing to help and encourage this vital part of the GP work force.
